Introduction

In a momentous development in the field of neuro rehabilitation, BCMCH is thrilled to announce the remarkable progress of Mr. Saju Kurien, a patient who has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation following a severe cervical spinal cord injury. This significant milestone highlights the efficacy of our rehabilitation programs and the dedication of our medical team.

Patient Background

Mr. Saju Kurien was referred to BCMCH from Aster Hospital Kochi, where he had been receiving initial treatment. Upon arrival, he was admitted to the 5th-floor Orthopedic Ward, having sustained a complete cervical spinal cord injury resulting in quadriplegia. This type of injury affects all four limbs and can severely impact a patient’s quality of life.

Rehabilitation Journey

Since being admitted to BCMCH three months ago, Mr. Kurien has been undergoing comprehensive neuro rehabilitation. The treatment has involved a multidisciplinary approach, including occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT), aimed at maximizing his functional recovery and independence.

Key Aspects of Rehabilitation

  1. Occupational and Physical Therapy: Mr. Kurien's rehabilitation regimen has included rigorous OT and PT training, focusing on improving his motor functions, coordination, and overall physical strength. The dedicated efforts of our therapy team have been instrumental in his progress.

  2. Wheelchair Propulsion: A significant achievement in Mr. Kurien’s rehabilitation journey is his ability to propel a wheelchair independently. This milestone, captured in recent videos, demonstrates his improved upper body strength and coordination, reflecting the effectiveness of the therapy provided.

  3. Nutritional Support: Due to the nature of his injury and ongoing treatment, Mr. Kurien is currently on percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeds, which were placed by our Gastroenterology team. This method ensures he receives the necessary nutrition to support his rehabilitation and overall health.

Celebrating Progress

The improvement in Mr. Kurien’s condition is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our medical professionals. The videos showcasing his ability to maneuver the wheelchair are a source of inspiration and highlight the potential for recovery even in the face of severe injuries.
