A Milestone in Interventional Radiology: Successful Percutaneous Uterine Fibroid Ablation at BCMCH by Dr Tom George
We are delighted to share a significant advancement in the spectrum of interventional radiology at Believers Church Medical College Hospital (BCMCH). In yet another breakthrough, Dr Tom George from the Department of Interventional Radiology successfully performed a Percutaneous Uterine Fibroid Ablation on a 35-year-old female patient—a pioneering procedure that marks a first in Central Travancore and places BCMCH among a select few centers in South India equipped to offer this advanced therapy.
Case Summary:
A 35-year-old woman presented to our Interventional Radiology Outpatient Department with a palpable abdominal mass. Detailed imaging and clinical evaluation revealed a subserosal uterine fibroid, a common but often distressing benign tumor in women of reproductive age. The patient had previously consulted multiple medical centers and was advised to undergo surgery, including options like myomectomy or hysterectomy.
However, the patient expressed strong reservations against surgical intervention.
Non-Surgical Alternative: IR-Based Fibroid Management
After detailed counselling about both surgical and non-surgical options, the family opted for a minimally invasive, uterus-preserving procedure—Percutaneous Uterine Fibroid Ablation.
Key Details:
-
Procedure Type: Percutaneous Ablation (likely radiofrequency or microwave-based)
-
Indication: Symptomatic Subserosal Uterine Fibroid
-
Approach: Minimally invasive, percutaneous entry under imaging guidance
-
Anaesthesia Support: Essential for pain management and procedural safety
-
Imaging Guidance: Real-time ultrasound and/or CT for precise targeting
Post-Procedure Outcome:
The procedure was uneventful, and the patient experienced a smooth recovery phase, with no immediate complications. The ability to manage fibroids without open surgery is a game-changer for patients desiring uterine preservation, minimal downtime, and reduced procedural risks.
BCMCH – A Pioneer in IR Treatments for Fibroid Uterus
This successful case adds another feather to the cap of the Department of Interventional Radiology at BCMCH, which has already been regularly performing Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE) for the past four years. While UFE remains a well-established treatment, this new modality of percutaneous ablation provides an additional advanced option, especially for carefully selected patients like this one.
Teamwork Makes It Possible
Such success stories are possible only because of coordinated multidisciplinary collaboration. This procedure stands as a testament to:
-
The technical expertise of Dr Tom George
-
Outstanding support from the Anaesthesia Team
-
Efficiency and preparedness of the Radiology Department staff
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Tom George for his clinical excellence and commitment to bringing innovative care to our patients. Your work continues to elevate BCMCH's reputation as a leader in cutting-edge medical care in South India.
