Colon Cancer: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Colon Cancer: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Early detection and timely treatment can significantly improve survival rates. As part of the awareness initiative, Dr. Deepak K. Johnson, Associate Professor in Gastroenterology, will discuss this important topic on the DD Malayalam program "Samuhyapadam."

Understanding Colon Cancer

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, begins in the large intestine (colon) or rectum. It often starts as small, benign growths called polyps that can develop into cancer over time.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of colon cancer is not always known, but several factors increase the risk:

🔹 Age: People over 50 are at higher risk.
🔹 Dietary Habits: High consumption of red and processed meats, along with a low-fiber diet, can contribute to colon cancer.
🔹 Family History: A family history of colon or rectal cancer increases susceptibility.
🔹 Lifestyle Factors: Obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity are linked to higher risk.
🔹 Chronic Conditions: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis can increase the risk.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer symptoms may not appear in the early stages, making regular screening crucial. Common symptoms include:

Changes in Bowel Habits – Persistent diarrhea, constipation, or narrow stools.
Blood in Stool – Bright red or dark stools may indicate bleeding.
Unexplained Weight Loss – Rapid weight loss without changes in diet or activity.
Abdominal Discomfort – Cramps, bloating, or pain that persists.
Fatigue and Weakness – Persistent tiredness even with proper rest.

Screening and Diagnosis

Regular screenings are vital for early detection, especially for individuals over 45 or those with a family history of colorectal cancer. Common diagnostic tests include:

🔬 Colonoscopy – A flexible tube with a camera is used to examine the colon.
🔬 Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) – Detects hidden blood in the stool.
🔬 CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy) – A non-invasive imaging test.
🔬 Biopsy – Tissue samples from polyps are examined for cancerous cells.

Treatment Options for Colon Cancer

Treatment depends on the stage of cancer and overall health of the patient. The most common treatment methods include:

🔹 Surgery: Removal of cancerous sections of the colon.
🔹 Chemotherapy: Use of drugs to destroy cancer cells, often post-surgery.
🔹 Radiation Therapy: Targeted radiation to kill cancer cells, mainly for rectal cancer.
🔹 Targeted Therapy: Medications that focus on cancer cell growth mechanisms.
🔹 Immunotherapy: Boosts the body’s immune system to fight cancer cells.

Prevention and Lifestyle Changes

While some risk factors are unavoidable, certain lifestyle modifications can help reduce the risk of colon cancer:

Eat a Healthy Diet: Increase fiber intake with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Maintain a Healthy Weight: Regular exercise and balanced nutrition play a crucial role.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Both increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
Get Regular Screenings: Especially if you have a family history of colon cancer.
