The Department of Orthopaedics at Believers Church Medical College Hospital (BCMCH), in collaboration with the Central Travancore Orthopaedic Society (CTOS), proudly hosted the 80th ISSH Basic Course in Hand Surgery. This landmark event was particularly significant as it marked the first-ever ISSH Basic Course held in Kerala, offering a valuable learning platform for Orthopaedic and Plastic surgeons to refine their skills in hand surgery.

A Grand Opening: Learning from the Experts

The program commenced with a warm welcome address by Prof. Dr. Bhaskaranand Kumar, Past President of the Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand (ISSH). He introduced the course objectives and highlighted the importance of specialized training in hand surgery.

Prof. Dr. Anil Bhatt, President of ISSH, played a pivotal role in moderating the sessions, ensuring in-depth discussions and interactive learning. The event also featured insightful lectures and case discussions by renowned hand surgery specialists, including:

  • Radiology in Hand Surgery – Interpretation of X-rays and imaging for accurate diagnosis.
  • Anesthesia Techniques – Safe and effective regional anesthesia methods for hand procedures.
  • Tendon and Nerve Repairs – Techniques for restoring function in injured hands.
  • Fracture Management – Best practices for treating hand and wrist fractures.

Participants also engaged in video tutorials and interactive discussions on advanced surgical techniques such as:

🔹 Carpal Tunnel Decompression – Surgical intervention for median nerve compression.

The second day of the program focused on complex hand injuries and reconstructive procedures, with sessions on:

  • Scaphoid Fractures & Carpal Instability – Challenges in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Distal Radius Fractures – Latest approaches for restoring wrist function.
  • Paronychia & Infections – Managing nail bed infections and soft tissue injuries.
  • Advanced Flap Techniques – Skin grafting and reconstructive procedures for soft tissue coverage.
  • Postoperative Care & Hand Therapy – Rehabilitation strategies for optimal patient recovery.

The event concluded with intensive hands-on workshops, allowing participants to practice:
