Surgical Success: Celebrating 6 Months of Excellence

A Milestone for Dr. Jino Sebastian and the Department of Surgical Oncology

It is with great pride and admiration that we celebrate the remarkable achievements of Dr. Jino Sebastian and his dedicated team in the Department of Surgical Oncology. Over the past six months, they have performed an impressive 60 surgeries, each a testament to their skill, dedication, and unwavering commitment to patient care.

The range of procedures undertaken by the team showcases their versatility and expertise in tackling a diverse array of cancers. From head and neck cancers, such as tongue and thyroid carcinomas, to gastrointestinal malignancies affecting the rectum, colon, and esophagus, the team has left no stone unturned in their quest to save lives.

Breast cancer, a leading concern for women's health, has also been a key focus, with the team performing complex reconstructions using innovative techniques like the island nasolabial flap and oncoplasty procedures such as TDAP and LICAP flap reconstructions.

The team's prowess extends beyond, as evidenced by their successful treatment of a huge pheochromocytoma, a rare and challenging tumor, and their expertise in gynecological cancers, including advanced ovarian and endometrial carcinomas.

Here is a more detailed breakdown of some of the notable procedures performed:

  1. Island Nasolabial Flap Reconstruction of Tongue: This intricate procedure involves using a flap of tissue from the face to reconstruct the tongue, ensuring both functional and aesthetic outcomes.

  2. Thoracoscopic Esophagectomy: A minimally invasive approach to removing cancer of the esophagus, this technique reduces post-operative pain and speeds up recovery.

  3. TDAP Flap Reconstruction of Breast: A Level 2 oncoplastic procedure, the Thoracodorsal Artery Perforator (TDAP) flap reconstruction, utilizes the patient's own tissue to restore the breast after a lumpectomy, achieving superior cosmetic results.

  4. LICAP Flap Reconstruction of Breast: Another Level 2 oncoplastic procedure, the Lateral Intercostal Artery Perforator (LICAP) flap reconstruction, offers a similar approach to breast reconstruction, providing natural-looking results.

  5. Tertiary Cytoreduction of Ovarian Cancer Recurrence: This complex surgery aims to remove as much of the recurrent ovarian cancer as possible, improving the patient's prognosis.

  6. Extensive Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection: In the case of endometrial cancer with extensive nodal disease, the team performed a dissection up to the renal veins, ensuring comprehensive cancer control.

  7. Ilioinguinal Node Dissection for Squamous Cell Carcinoma: This procedure addressed a giant condyloma in the perianal region, with plastic surgery techniques used to reconstruct the perianal defect, ensuring the patient's comfort and functionality.

  8. Huge Pheochromocytoma Excision: The successful removal of this rare and challenging tumor showcases the team's ability to tackle complex endocrine malignancies.

  9. Interval Cytoreduction for Paraneoplastic CVA: In a patient with ovarian cancer and a history of stroke, the team performed cytoreduction while carefully managing anticoagulant therapy.

  10. Right Hemicolectomy for Psychiatric Patient: This surgery addressed a tumor adherent to the duodenum in a patient with psychiatric illness, demonstrating the team's ability to manage complex cases with comorbidities.

  11. Modified Radical Mastectomy for Elderly Patient: A 75-year-old lady with both cardiac issues and psychiatric illness underwent a modified radical mastectomy, highlighting the team's comprehensive approach to patient care.

These achievements are a testament to the unwavering dedication, expertise, and compassion of Dr. Jino Sebastian and his surgical oncology team. Their commitment to excellence and patient-centric care has undoubtedly changed lives and offers hope to those facing a cancer diagnosis.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also look forward to the continued success and groundbreaking work of this incredible team, knowing that they are at the forefront of the fight against cancer.

Congratulations, Dr. Jino Sebastian and the Department of Surgical Oncology!
