Liver Cancer Awareness: Myths, Facts, and Prevention Strategies

Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, yet it remains a misunderstood disease. Many people are unaware of the risk factors, early symptoms, and available treatment options. Dr. Tom George, a renowned cancer expert, will shed light on this critical topic during a Facebook Live session at 7:30 PM on March 19, 2025. This session, part of the Kerala Cancer Awareness Initiative supported by Believers Hospital and ICL Fincorp, aims to educate the public on liver cancer prevention and treatment.

Understanding Liver Cancer

Liver cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the liver grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors. The most common type is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which arises from liver cells. Other forms include cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) and liver metastases, where cancer spreads from other organs to the liver.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Liver cancer often develops due to chronic liver disease and long-term exposure to harmful substances. Some key risk factors include:

  • Hepatitis B and C Infections: Chronic viral infections cause inflammation and scarring (cirrhosis), leading to cancer.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Excessive alcohol intake damages liver cells and promotes cancer formation.
  • Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Obesity and diabetes can cause fatty deposits in the liver, increasing cancer risk.
  • Aflatoxin Exposure: Contaminated food products, such as nuts and grains, contain toxins produced by molds that may cause liver cancer.
  • Genetic Factors: A family history of liver cancer increases susceptibility.
  • Smoking: Tobacco contains carcinogens that contribute to liver cancer development.

Early Symptoms and Diagnosis

Liver cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage due to a lack of early symptoms. However, some warning signs include:

Unexplained weight loss
Loss of appetite and nausea
Abdominal pain and swelling
Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
Fatigue and weakness

Early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Regular liver function tests, ultrasound scans, and blood tests (AFP test) help diagnose liver cancer in high-risk individuals.

Is Liver Cancer Preventable?

Yes! Liver cancer prevention starts with adopting a healthy lifestyle and managing risk factors:

Get Vaccinated: Hepatitis B vaccination can significantly reduce liver cancer risk.
Limit Alcohol and Tobacco: Reducing consumption helps protect liver health.
Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains reduces liver damage.
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps manage obesity and diabetes.
Undergo Regular Checkups: People at risk should have routine liver screenings.

Treatment and Advances in Liver Cancer Care

Liver cancer treatment depends on the stage of the disease and the patient’s overall health. Available treatments include:

  • Surgery: Removal of cancerous tissue in early-stage liver cancer.
  • Liver Transplantation: Replacing the diseased liver with a healthy donor liver.
  • Targeted Therapy: Medications that attack specific cancer cells while sparing normal cells.
  • Immunotherapy: Boosting the immune system to fight cancer.
  • Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy: Used for advanced stages to slow tumor growth.
