A Journey Towards Holistic Wellness: Focusing on Mental Health in Physical Rehabilitation

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) - Psychology Unit recently hosted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program, titled "A Journey Towards Holistic Wellness – Mental Health in Physical Rehabilitation," which emphasized the vital role of mental health in comprehensive patient recovery.

The event opened with an invocation led by Rev. Thomas Varghese, setting a reflective tone that underscored the event’s purpose: promoting wellness beyond physical health alone.

Dr. Sijiya Binu, Founder and Chairperson of Athma, delivered the inaugural address, emphasizing the importance of mental health in the post-pandemic era. She spoke of the pandemic’s profound impact on individuals’ mental well-being, noting that addressing these challenges is essential for holistic patient care in today’s healthcare landscape.

Dr. John Valliattu presented the presidential address, reiterating the urgency of integrating mental health awareness into healthcare systems. His remarks highlighted the responsibility of medical institutions to not only treat physical ailments but also to address the emotional and psychological needs of patients.

Following these addresses, Dr. Geomcy George and Johnson Edayaranmula offered felicitations, commending the collaborative efforts and commitment to prioritizing mental health in rehabilitation care. Their words reflected a shared vision for a more holistic approach to healthcare, where mental and physical health are treated as interdependent components of recovery.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks from Gokul, Medical Social Worker in the PMR department, who acknowledged the efforts of all involved in bringing attention to this critical issue.

The CME served as a powerful reminder of the mental health crisis that many patients face, and the need for a collective, empathetic approach to address these challenges within rehabilitation and beyond. Through these discussions, participants were encouraged to take meaningful action, aiming to foster environments that support both the physical and mental well-being of patients, thereby advancing the journey toward truly holistic wellness.
