Successful POEM Procedures at BCMCH on Doctors' Day 2024

In an exciting development on Doctors' Day 2024, the Department of Gastroenterology and CeAGE at BCMCH, under the expert leadership of Dr. Deepak Johnson, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing two Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) procedures. This cutting-edge intervention is a testament to our relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation in medical care.

What is POEM?

Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is an advanced third space endoscopic technique primarily used to treat esophageal motility disorders, such as achalasia. This minimally invasive procedure involves creating a tunnel within the esophageal wall to access and cut the muscles causing the motility issue, thereby alleviating symptoms like difficulty swallowing and regurgitation.

The Significance of This Achievement

The successful execution of these POEM procedures marks a major advancement for BCMCH and its Department of Gastroenterology. It underscores our commitment to adopting the latest medical technologies and procedures to provide the highest standard of care to our patients.

Leadership and Collaboration

This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of Dr. Deepak Johnson. His expertise and dedication have been instrumental in guiding the team through this complex procedure.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to:

  • Gastroenterology Department Colleagues: Your relentless effort and teamwork were crucial.
  • Endoscopy Unit Staff: Your meticulous preparation and support ensured the success of the procedures.
  • Anesthesia Department: Special thanks to Dr. Ivan and Dr. Ashu for their critical role in patient care.
  • ICU Team: Dr. Gayatri and Philip Mathew, your vigilance and expertise in postoperative care were invaluable.
  • GI Surgery & CVTS Unit: Your backup and readiness provided the necessary safety net.

Support from BCMCH Management

We are deeply appreciative of the BCMCH management for their unwavering support in procuring the state-of-the-art equipment necessary for POEM. This investment in advanced medical technology reflects BCMCH's commitment to pioneering new medical frontiers and enhancing patient outcomes.

The Road Ahead

The successful completion of these POEM procedures is a significant step forward in our journey towards medical excellence. It not only highlights the capabilities of our medical team but also sets a new benchmark for the treatment of esophageal motility disorders at BCMCH.

As we celebrate this milestone on Doctors' Day 2024, we are inspired to continue pushing the boundaries of medical science and to keep striving for excellence in patient care. This achievement serves as a reminder of what we can accomplish through dedication, collaboration, and innovation.

We look forward to more groundbreaking successes in the future, driven by our unwavering commitment to advancing medical care and improving the lives of our patients.
