Inauguration of the Cytogenetics Laboratory

NEWSBREAK: Inauguration of the Cytogenetics Laboratory

We are thrilled to announce the inauguration of the Cytogenetics Laboratory at our institution. The ceremony was graced by Rev. Fr. Sijo Pandapallil, Manager, BCMCH, and Dr. George Chandy Matteethra, Director & CEO, BCMCH. The new laboratory, located in the Anatomy Research Lab of the Medical College Building, marks a significant advancement in our diagnostic and research capabilities.

A Collaborative Effort

The establishment of the Cytogenetics Laboratory is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Departments of Anatomy, Pathology, and the Central Research Laboratory. This initiative aligns with the requirements of the National Medical Commission and aims to enhance our diagnostic and research services significantly.

Diagnostic Services

1. Chromosome Analysis

The laboratory is currently equipped to perform standardized chromosome analysis, a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying genetic abnormalities and aiding in the diagnosis of various genetic disorders.

2. FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization)

In the near future, the laboratory will offer FISH services. This advanced technique allows for the detection of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes, providing valuable insights for diagnosing and researching genetic diseases.

Research Services

The Cytogenetics Laboratory is not only focused on diagnostics but also on advancing research in the field of genetics. The following research services will be available:

1. CBMN (Cytokinesis-Block Micronucleus) Assay

This assay is used to assess chromosomal instability and DNA damage, providing vital data for cancer research and other genetic studies.

2. Chromosome Breaks

The analysis of chromosome breaks is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of genetic damage and repair, contributing to the development of new therapeutic approaches.

3. Comet Assays

Comet assays, or single-cell gel electrophoresis, will be available to measure DNA strand breaks in individual cells. This technique is essential for studying genotoxicity and the effects of environmental toxins on DNA.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Cytogenetics Laboratory represents a significant milestone for our institution. By providing cutting-edge diagnostic and research services, we are committed to advancing medical science and improving patient care. This new facility will undoubtedly enhance our capabilities in genetics and contribute to groundbreaking research in the field.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Fr. Sijo Pandapallil and Dr. George Chandy Matteethra for their leadership and support in making this laboratory a reality. We also commend the collaborative efforts of the Departments of Anatomy, Pathology, and the Central Research Laboratory in establishing this vital resource.

Stay tuned for more updates on the advancements and contributions of our Cytogenetics Laboratory.
