Believers Church Medical College Empowers Nephrologists with Peritoneal Dialysis Workshop

Believers Church Medical College (BCMC) in Thiruvalla continues to be a leader in promoting peritoneal dialysis (PD) as a viable treatment option for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Their Department of Nephrology recently hosted a successful State Level Peritoneal Dialysis Workshop on February 25th, 2024.

Equipping Nephrologists for Better Patient Care

The workshop aimed to equip practicing nephrologists with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively utilize PD. This treatment method offers several advantages over traditional hemodialysis, making it a valuable tool in a nephrologist's arsenal.

Addressing the Gap in PD Knowledge

Despite government initiatives like the Prime Minister National Dialysis Programme, access to PD remains limited for many CKD patients. A key factor identified is the lack of adequate training and discussion forums for nephrologists regarding PD.

BCMC: A Beacon for Peritoneal Dialysis

BCMCH has established itself as a frontrunner in PD initiatives. Their program, active for the past five years, has successfully introduced PD therapy to a significant number of patients in Central Travancore.

Building on Success: The Second Annual Workshop

This workshop marked the second consecutive year BCMCH's Department of Nephrology has organized this event, following a well-received workshop in 2023. The 2024 edition provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the practicalities of PD, complemented by hands-on training sessions.

Renowned Speakers Share Their Expertise

The workshop benefitted from the insights of esteemed speakers like Dr. S. Gomathy (Government Medical College Alleppey), Dr. Rajesh Joseph (HOD Nephrology, BCMCH), and Dr. Geo Philip John (Consultant Nephrologist, BCMCH). Dr. E.T Arun Thomas, Consultant Nephrologist at BCMCH, led the workshop.

Positive Feedback and Calls for More

The workshop drew the participation of 35 nephrologists from across Kerala. Participants lauded the event's high quality and practical value. Many expressed a desire for regular PD workshops to further enhance knowledge and expertise in this area.

A Step Forward in Improving CKD Care

The State Level Peritoneal Dialysis Workshop at BCMCH represents a significant step towards improving access to PD throughout the region. By empowering nephrologists with the necessary skills and knowledge, BCMCH is paving the way for better patient care and improved outcomes for CKD patients.
