In a groundbreaking initiative, the Department of Nephrology at Believers Church Medical College, Thiruvalla, hosted the second consecutive State Level Peritoneal Dialysis Workshop. This workshop, held on February 25th, 2024, aimed to provide practising nephrologists with a deep understanding and hands-on experience in peritoneal dialysis, an impactful treatment modality for renal failure.

Addressing Barriers to Peritoneal Dialysis Access

Despite government support, especially through initiatives like the Prime Minister National Dialysis Programme, access to peritoneal dialysis remains limited for many renal failure patients. One major impediment identified is the insufficient training and academic discussions among nephrologists regarding peritoneal dialysis. Believers Church Medical College Hospital has been actively working to overcome this barrier, running a robust peritoneal dialysis program for the past five years and initiating numerous patients onto peritoneal dialysis in Central Travancore.

Key Objectives of the Workshop

The Peritoneal Dialysis Workshop served as a crucial platform for comprehensive discussions on the practical aspects of peritoneal dialysis, supplemented by hands-on training sessions. The goal was to empower nephrologists with the knowledge and skills necessary to expand the accessibility and adoption of peritoneal dialysis as a viable treatment option.

Esteemed Speakers and Workshop Leaders

The workshop featured esteemed speakers, including Dr. S. Gomathy, Head of the Department at Government Medical College Alleppey; Dr. Rajesh Joseph, HOD Nephrology at Believers Church Medical College; and Dr. Geo Philip John, Consultant Nephrologist at Believers Church Medical College. Leading the workshop was Dr. E.T Arun Thomas, Consultant Nephrologist at Believers Church Medical College, bringing a wealth of expertise to guide the participants.

A total of 35 nephrologists from various parts of Kerala actively participated in the workshop. The participants lauded the workshop for its high-quality content and practical utility. Expressing their satisfaction, many participants voiced requests for regular Peritoneal Dialysis Workshops to continuously enhance their knowledge and expertise in the field.
